Civet Cat Public House, C.1890

The Civet Cat Public House used to be on the corner of Kensington High Street. Note the enormous gas light outside its front doors. Public places such as pubs and theatres had large lamps so they were easy to see in the dark streets. This busy scene tells us a lot about everyday life. Look out for the bicycle, milk cart, horse drawn bus and carriages.

Civet Cat Public House, 2003

The Civet Cat no longer exists. A newer building is on the corner. If you look carefully you can see that some of the buildings seen in the older photograph are still there.
