From now on, the wages paid to silkweavers working in and around London will be
regulated by the local authorities. Silkweavers are not to take more than two
apprentices at a time. This is to avoid overcrowding the industry with workers
for whom there is not enough work.
This Act brings to an end a long-running and sometimes violent dispute over
pay between the journeymen silkweavers of Spitalfields and Bethnal Green and
the master weavers who keep them in work. Members of the Huguenot community
are involved on both sides of the struggle.
