1718 - The French Protestant Hospital is founded
<< Back

The hospital is known as La Providence. It is situated just off Old Street, on a lane leading to Islington. It is able to provide care for about 225 people from the Huguenot community.

Some of these are frail elderly people. Others are sick. The staff of the hospital includes a doctor, a surgeon and an apothecary (pharmacist). Mentally ill people are also cared for here.

From their first arrival, the Huguenots had always looked after any members of their community who were sick, elderly or poor. They prided themselves that none of their people were ever found begging on the streets.
