1694 - Sir John Houblon becomes the first Governor of the Bank of England

The Bank of England is founded by royal charter. Beside the Governor, Sir John Houblon, five of the twenty-four directors belong to old French and Walloon families. Another, Theodore Janssen, is a recently arrived refugee.
