1661 - There are new pressures on the Huguenots in France

Cardinal Mazarin has been chief minister to King Louis the Fourteenth of France for nearly twenty years. He has protected the Huguenots for political reasons.

After his death, the Huguenots in France are put under increasing pressure to become Catholics. Many of their churches are demolished. In some cities they are banned from becoming aldermen. They find it harder to join craft guilds.

Over the next two decades, an increasing number of Huguenots will leave the country, guessing, correctly, that matters will only get worse
