Elma's Study

For hundreds of years Irish people have come to live in London. Most came to get away from poverty and persecution in Ireland. Irish people worked in many different jobs.

They were employed as gardeners, servants, chimney sweeps, builders and street traders or coster mongers. The lives of these individuals are recorded in different documents. At London Metropolitan Archives there are many of these records which tell the story of Irish people in London. Some people are listed in court records, others in newspapers and journals praising their success. All the stories and plays in this section are inspired by or based on those records – real people with their own histories and experiences.

Above is Elma's study. Click on different parts and start to explore the lives of Irish people further.
