1605 - Irish beggars are arriving from France
<< Back

These are penniless emigrants who were begging their way round France until the French government passed a law to banish them. Now they are arriving in England in large numbers. Many of them are ending up in London.

The Warden of the Cinque Ports is ordered to take steps to prevent any further shiploads from landing on the South Coast. Any Irish people who arrive are to be searched for money. If any money is found on them, it is to be spent on sending them back to Ireland. If they cannot be deported to Ireland, they are to be returned to France.
