1629 - The government is concerned about the growing numbers of beggars in London
<< Back

The Lord Mayor and Aldermen organise a major search for beggars and homeless people. Many of those who are rounded up turn out to be Irish.

They are made to do hard labour (probably in Bridewell, the house of correction). However, most of them are too weak from starvation to do the work on the limited ration of food allowed them.

The Lord Mayor and Aldermen request the government to take steps to send these people back to Ireland.
