1566 - Refugees from Munster are wandering round Kent
<< Back

Thomas Harman, a gentleman living at Crayford in Kent, not far from London, has many beggars calling at his door for charity. He notices that quite a few are refugees from Ireland.

Harman estimates that there are more than a hundred of these people travelling the roads in his district. They have been driven out of Munster as the result of a private war between the Earl of Ormonde and the Earl of Munster.
