1587 - Refugees from Munster are sent back to Ireland
<< Back

Elizabeth's government orders the authorities in the port of Bristol to find food, lodging and transport to Ireland for a group of poor Irish people who are being sent to them by the Lord Mayor of London. They are also told that in future they must prevent poor Irish people like these from landing in their port. They must tell the masters of the ships that have brought them there to take them back to Ireland.

The government also orders the Munster authorities to find work for these people when they arrive home. The Lord Deputy of Ireland and the authorities in the various Irish ports are instructed to prevent poor Irish people from travelling to England.
