1594 - A royal proclamation orders Irish people to go back to Ireland
<< Back

The government has uncovered an Irish plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth. They are afraid that there may be more rebel agents lurking unnoticed among the Irish people living in London or attending Elizabeth's royal court.

The proclamation orders that all Irish-born people in England should return immediately to Ireland. Otherwise they will be imprisoned and punished as if they were vagabonds.

Some people are allowed to stay:

  • law-abiding householders
  • servants of noblemen, gentlemen or respectable householders
  • students at Oxford and Cambridge or at the Inns of Court in London
  • anyone who has come with a recommendation from the Queen's Deputy in Ireland or one of the provincial governors there
